Subscribing to Sky needn't cost you an arm and a leg, and represents one of the most cost-effective entertainment packages around.

But, also, you can get a Sky free box and not have to subscribe to Sky TV. This offer is limited to one box per household.

Although, most people get their free Sky box (usually subject to a set-up cost), alongside a subscription. For only £16.50 a month, you can get a free Sky box, plus one entertainment pack (from a choice of six).

Thus, when you get a free Sky box, you can then start to tailor your viewing package to your own tastes. Don't forget the base price is just £16.50 and most people opt for the Variety Pack, which gives you a great blend of paid-for channels, and all the free-to-view channels as well. You can then choose various entertainment packs at only £1 a month more each. So, if you were to plump for all six packs - Variety, Knowledge, News, Children's, Music, and Style and Culture - it would cost only £21.50 a month.

If you then wanted to add Sky Movies to your free Sky box deal, you would add them to your existing entertainment packs from as little as £9 a month more. So, if you were a one pack customer and decided to add on Sky Movies 1, the total monthly cost would be £23.50. For two packs, £26.50, right up to £29.50 for six packs and Sky Movies 1.

Do the same with Sky Movies 2 and your monthly costs again range from £25.50 to £29.50. Buy both Sky Movie options - the Movies Pack - and the price ranges from £33.50 to £37.50.

It works the same for Sky's sports options. If you then wanted to add Sky Sports to your free Sky box deal, you would add them to your existing entertainment packs from as little as £11 a month more. So, if you were a one pack customer and decided to add on Sky Sports 1, the total monthly cost would be £27.50. For two packs, £28.50, right up to £31.50 for six packs and Sky Sports 1.

Do the same with Sky Sports 2 and your monthly costs again range from £27.50 to £31.50. Buy both Sky Sport options - the Sports Pack - and the price ranges from £35.50 to £39.50.

Now, of course, its possible to add both Movies and Sports, along with the entertainment packs, and come up with a large number of combinations which are designed to suit your tastes and viewing pleasures. The monthly cost of the ultimate monthly package is £46. From there you can also add on a Sky+ box, or an all-singing, all-dancing Sky+HD box, and also opt for Sky Multiroom, which allows for a number of Sky boxes in the house.

From then on you can also add Sky Broadband, or Sky Talk, creating a complete home service.

So, starting at your free Sky box, it's only up from there.
